Who He's Done: Devon's Relationships

Devon's onscreen interaction with the other characters was fairly limited, to Oz and Cordelia in the main. However, several characters did get to meet him and/or have been paired up with him in fic, so here we take a quick look at the possible and actual romantic interludes open to Devon.

Angel
Angel and Devon met in the Bronze in Dopplegangland. In dialogue cut from the actual episode, Devon attempted (unsuccessfully) to convince Angel to take a job as the Dingoes' roadie. Whether that's because Angel happened to be there when the thought occurred to Devon or because Devon liked the look of Angel is for you to decide.

Buffy
The two obviously knew each other by the events of Dead Man's Party, as Devon addressed Buffy directly and by name in his only line. As two pretty people they've been paired up by several writers but there isn't a great deal of interaction to work with.

Cordelia
The first and only on-screen romantic relationship for Devon was with Queen C. They seemed to be have been brought together by the unwritten High School dating rules which dictated that the popular dated the popular, and a minor local celebrity like Devon was high enough up the social food chain that an arch- socialite like early Cordelia was happy to be seen on his arm. The only problem was that Devon was a less than attentive boyfriend and ultimately proved more fickle than Cordelia herself.

For her part, Cordy did seem to treat him more as an accessory than a love interest. They're a supremely shallow couple for these reasons but Devon's easy charm was a fine foil to Cordelia's spiky attitude.

Harmony
We never saw anythin of it, but Harmony was Devon's second canon relationship. Oz mentioned in Harsh Light of Day that the two dated for a time but broke up as Harmony was too flaky even for Devon. It might be assumed that as the second-in-command of the Cordettes, Harmony felt she was next in the dating queue. One wonders how bad she was for Devon to find her too flaky but she and Cordelia are illustrative of the sort of girl Devon evidently either likes or feels he should date - not necessarily the same thing.

Jonathan
They were only in the same scene once - Buffy's hootenanny in Dead Man's Party - but a small group of writers has made this pairing quite popular (at least by the standards of Devon fic). It's an opposites attract deal - short, unpopular geek somehow capturing the heart of the tall, popular rock star. Which works, oddly enough.

Oz

Willow
There is a tendency to make Willow and Devon enemies - usually rival suitors for the love and/or friendship of Oz. However, from their one scene together in Harsh Light of Day there was no obvious antagonism. It seems Willow regarded Devon with a sort of wry amusement and Devon evidently found her at least a little attractive (especially when she was in leather).

Xander
Though they never really interacted in the show there's still been a fair bit of fic involving the two. It's actually much more common to find Xander in a threesome with Oz and Devon rather than with Devon alone though. Pot-fuelled orgies are quite popular and generally the theme is one of teenage sexual exploration.
